Sheriff Brad Swain grew up in Monroe County. He has been applying his knowledge and experience with the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office since 1985 in all three of the areas which he now directs…the Correctional Center, the Patrol Division and the Civil Division.
Swain received his degree in Law Enforcement from Vincennes University, where he was on the Dean’s List. He continued his education with additional credit hours from Indiana University and University of Virginia in the areas of Law Enforcement. Throughout his career, he has attended national workshops and conferences, gaining several hundred hours of additional specialized Law Enforcement training.
Sheriff Swain is a graduate of the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy, receiving academic honors. He is also a graduate of the FBI National Academy.
He believes in interagency collaboration, and has been a voice in community discussion on several important issues. For more than 10 years, Swain served as a trainer for Middle Way House on-scene advocates. He also served on the Domestic Violence Task Force. These efforts were to ensure that women who are in dangerous situations can be protected.
He helped start and served for many years on the Monroe County Child Fatality Review Team. Sheriff Swain also helped organize the Child Abuse Medical Protocol Committee which established medical and investigatory policy for Bloomington Hospital, Office of Family and Child Services as well as Law Enforcement when high risk factors are found in an injured child. Another initiative that Swain was instrumental in implementing was the creation of the interagency Monroe County Dive Team for search and recovery.
